Custom Slipcover Tips and Faqs (frequently asked questions)
- YES! You can have machine washable slipcovers.
First, determine whether the fabric you like is suitable for machine washing. Some fabrics are definitely dry-clean only. Fancy brocades and anything with a ‘shine’ or ‘sheen’ needs to be dry-clean only. Washable fabrics include denims, cottons, linens, canvas, etc. If you’re not certain, please ask. We’ll be glad to advise. - YES! Here’s how to pre-wash and dry your fabrics:
Your natural fiber fabric must be pre-washed in hot water, good detergent, then completely dried with high heat BEFORE we ever come to you to drape and cut. It’s very important to pre-shrink your fabric. We recommend you take all your fabric yardage to a commercial laundrymat and use a large capacity front-loading washing machine and dryer. Remove your fabric from the dryer only when it’s completely dry, then fold it loosley to prevent major wrinkles. - YES! WHITE denim and canvas are great for custom slipcovers!
The reason? When you machine wash these slipcovers, you can add some bleach to your wash cycle to get them extra white and clean. Make certain your slipcovers are fully wet, submersed in water and have been agitating in your washer for 5-10 minutes before adding any bleach. - YES! Sometimes it’s very important that your new custom slipcover gets one or two zippers in it. If your furniture item is ‘undercut’ (meaning, if its top parts are larger than its lower parts) you will struggle (and so will we ) to take off/put on a very tailored custom slipcover that has no zippers. We will always create beautiful, lapped zipper installations so the teeth are never exposed. It’s the proper, tailored way to do things.
- YES! We use heavy duty zippers.
There’s nothing worse than those old-fashioned, cheap, thin aluminum zipper chains (the sort you find in many vintage cushion covers). These break and jam WAY too easily. We only use heavy duty zippers. - NO! We do not use velcro.
Unless you specifically ask us. And then, we will still persuade you that zippers are better. Velcro can make a mess of your slipcovers in the washing machine and dryer. No point going to all the design, labor and expense if there’s a chance your beautiful fabric and new slipcovers might get damaged in the wash.
