Custom Mascot: Ogden-Weber Area Technical College’s “Randy Robotech”

mcgrewsadmin · September 6, 2015 ·

Ogden-Weber Applied Technical College (OWATC) is the first trade-tech school in Utah to develop a branded mascot to promote its educational mission and programs.

Robert Hirschi, multimedia journalist for the Salt Lake Tribune, presents a behind-the-scenes account of some of the steps in this creative process as well as the people behind it. Interviewed are OWATC creative directors Brock Porter and Jenny Everson, plus costume maker Jen McGrew with Katrina Kirkland-Cornia.

His documentary details the mascot from concept to realized costume for OWATC’s performer to wear at job fairs, parades, etc.

Custom Headless Horseman: Rocky Mountain Outfitters’ Haunted Wagon Rides

mcgrewsadmin · September 6, 2015 ·

Custom headless horseman costume we designed for Rocky Mountain Outfitters’ Haunted Wagon Rides attraction, 2014.

We designed it so each of the pieces are each individually made for easy care and washing/drycleaning. The horseman’s head/neck apparatus itself weighs less than a pound. Great for visibility, safety and maneuverability.

When you create a costume like this, you cannot simply alter existing items (such as your vest and cape) to make it work. The proportions and drape will be completely wrong. We built the fake neck/shoulder apparatus, and only then started patterning/draping the waistcoat and cape.
